Ziua Culturii Naționale coincide cu ziua în care se împlinesc 171 de ani de la nașterea marelui poet Mihai Eminescu. Puțini mai sunt cei care nu au citit măcar o poezie ce aparține scriitorului sau care nu sunt familiarizați cu biografia sa, cel puțin la modul general.
De asemenea, nu mulți știu că poetul a scris cea mai frumoasă rugăciune, pe care Papa Ioan Paul al II-lea a recitat-o în anul 1999 la Vatican, în limba română. Geniul lui Mihai Eminescu este incomparabil, așa cum a recunoscut și fostul suveran pontif la momentul respectiv. Acesta a ținut ca rugăciunea poetului să fie cunoscută de cât mai multe persoane.
În 1999, înainte de vizita sa în România, cel de-al 264-lea Papă a recitat rugăciunea în Piața San Pietro din Roma, informează Ziarul Unirea.

Mihai Eminescu, marele poet romantic
Poezia lui Mihai Eminescu aparține unui Romantism întârziat, socotit de critica literară drept „ultimul mare poet romantic european”. Opera sa a fost influențată de marile sisteme filosofice ale vremii, dar și din Antichitate: Heraclit, Platon, Arthur Schopenhauer, Immanuel Kant sau Hegel.
Printre cele mai cunoscute poeme ale sale se numără „Glossă”, „Scrisoarea I”, „Scrisoarea a III-a”, „Lacul”, „Pe lângă plopii fără soț”. Cel mai cunoscut poem rămâne „Luceafărul”, fiind și cea mai lungă poezie de dragoste din literatura română (98 de strofe).
În afară de poezii, care sunt cele mai cunoscute, Mihai Eminescu a scris și proză, cele mai cunoscute lucrări fiind „Făt-Frumos din lacrimă”, „Călin-Nebunul” și „Sărmanul Dionis”.
Mihai Eminescu a făcut parte din societatea „Junimea”, fondată în 1863 de Titu Maiorescu, unul dintre cei mai mari critici literari români. Asociația culturală a cunoscut un succes răsunător în perioada 1874-1885, atunci când s-a conturat epoca Marilor Clasici: Eminescu, Creangă, Caragiale și Slavici, operele lor fiind publicate în paginile revistei „Convorbiri literare”.
Marele poet s-a stins din viață pe 15 iunie 1889, însă cauza decesului este discutată chiar și în ziua de azi, existând mai multe variante: tulburarea bipolară de care suferea, un posibil asasinat, sifilis sau tratamentul cu mercur, care i-ar fi fost fatal. Mihai Eminescu a fost înmormântat în cimitirul Bellu din București.
